History and Tradition of Japanese Painting
Unlike Western oil painting, Japanese painting (Nihon-ga) is an art form rooted in unique Japanese aesthetics and techniques, as well as centuries of tradition.
Reflecting Japan's unique view of nature, poetry, and spirituality, Nihon-ga gives viewers a sense of tranquil beauty and inner richness.
While Nihon-ga has long been influenced by China and Korea, a unique Japanese style has been established over the years, and many schools of Japanese painting (e.g., the Kano school and the Rinpa school) developed from the Kamakura period to the Edo period.
After the Meiji period, when Western techniques were introduced, the term "Nihon-ga" became established to refer to works that use traditional Japanese techniques and materials, and this tradition has been passed down to the present day. -
Traditional materials and techniques
In Japanese painting, traditional supports such as washi paper and silk are used, along with natural materials such as glue extracted from collagen as a fixing agent, mineral pigments made by crushing and powdering natural minerals, ink refined from soot and glue, chalk powder made from weathered shells, and dyes extracted from plants.
The unique textures and feel of these art materials create delicate and deep colors, making them ideal for expressing quiet emotions and poetic sentiments.
Traditional methods using natural materials and the handiwork of artisans are still used today. -
